Lest We Forget

Lest We Forget

Those souls sent brave and marching proud,

King and Country ring in youthful ear.

Smiles and waves and cheery hope

Off to cast their crowns in glory.

Boys. Just boys.

Lest we forget.

Their beating hearts and coursing blood,

Passion flames and love untapped.

Channelled in their virtuous stride

To mists unknown and lands uncharted.

Mists that thicken in reality’s horror,

Futility and blood wept into muddy fields.

Boys. Just boys.

Lest we forget.

And now we walk on pastures clean.

Blood and pain of history past

Lies strong for ever beneath the green.

Boys. Just boys.

Lest we forget.

Poppies counting every one.

Standing tall in gentle breeze.

A bloodied river, precious art,

sweeps through our nation’s remembering heart.

But have we learnt?

The past, our teacher.

Each one lost must be a lesson.

Boys.

Our boys.

Lest we forget.
